The Greener World Café (at The Coven, Wigan) Is it just us or is something very remarkable happening? The financial crisis has led to a partial breakdown of many established power structures across the globe. These structures have been largely responsible for the ‘carbon culture’ which has locked us into unsustainable lifestyles driven by the political/economic need for ‘growth’, seemingly at all costs. At the same time politicians are sticking their necks out and declaring Climate Change to be just as important as the global recession. Could you imagine that happening even a year ago? A new consensus at last appears to be emerging that we need to move to more sustainable living. For the optimists this is a real opportunity to bring about some very fundamental and deep-rooted changes. For the cynics, perhaps, economics will continue to win the day. As realists we think we have to do everything we can to try to bring about the right outcome. To help things in our little corner of the world we thought it would be a good idea to bring together like minded people to talk about these and other important environmental issues in a relaxed, social, setting – enabling a new form of cross-organisation environmental network to emerge. To support this new network, we are holding monthly ‘social’ meetings in our café in Wigan. We hope that individuals and groups will take the opportunity to share with others their particular focus or issues and gain a wider understanding from the environmental community. To kick things off, we have organised three initial talks but we hope in the future that new topics will emerge out of the debates we have and the issues that arise at a global and local level. The talks scheduled so far are Thursday Dec 11th , 7:00pm: Ecological Footprinting & the Story of Stuff. Gordon Brown has been quoted recently saying that we have got to learn to live within our limits, too right, environmentally as well as economically. Is Ecological Footprinting a way to help us achieve this? The world’s resources are running out and if we carry on the way we are going we could reach the point of no return quicker than we think. Thursday January 15th, 7:00pm: New Year Special. New Years Eco-Resolutions: From a personal scale to global opportunities – round-table discussion. Thursday February 12th , 7:00pm: Microgeneration /offgrid energy We’d ask people to arrive by 7.00pm so that we can begin the talk at about 7.30. There’ll be a light vegetarian supper served at about 8.30 to 9.00 depending upon how much discussion there is! We’ll aim to finish at about 9.30 to 10pm. We don’t have a licence to sell alcohol but if you fancy a glass of wine or beverage of your choice you are very welcome to bring a bottle and we will provide glasses and openers. Because of costs and overheads we do need to charge a fee of £6 for the evening. Please let us know if you can attend so that we can sort out the catering side of things by responding to this email or by phoning 01942 237800. But you will be very welcome if you can’t let us know but decide to turn up on the night. We hope you can come along to help us have the conversations that matter.
