Raw Food Evening - Thursday 6th October

The Coven’s Raw Food Event will give you the opportunity to sample delicious cuisine using a process that leaves food with almost 100% of its original nutritional value.  Most people’s view of raw cuisine is entirely wrong: Raw cuisine delivers a range of flavours and textures not usually found in cooked meals – and certainly not found in just the basic raw ingredients.  Raw cuisine is a whole style and philosophy of (not) cooking.  Whilst you can create raw version of many popular dishes, its often more interesting to create entirely new meals – focusing on flavour, texture and nourishment.

Who eats ‘Raw?’

Well, to an extent we all eat raw food already – typical examples being fruits and salad.  The quantity of raw food we consume, however, is very small – with more people eating ever higher quantities of processed food as free-time reduces Raw Chocolate Cakeand culinary skills diminish.

Those who wish to take an active role in their nourishment are increasing choosing to increase the amount of raw, unprocessed, food in their diets.  These people are increasing their raw intake from a few percent (typical modern diet) to 75% and beyond!  People moving in this direction are from all sorts of backgrounds – from the (already) healthy to those with a range of illnesses and dietary needs including:

  • Cancer: Raw food takes much less of the body’s energy to digest and is often more alkaline than modern processed  food – it seems generally agreed that a more alkaline diet is less supportive of cancer cells.
  • Food intolerances:  Food intolerances are often a result of years of eating processed food.  Even if you generally eat well, even basic things like flour and cheese are very different from the products used a century ago. Raw foods generally avoid all processed ingredients and return a diet back to a more healthy & natural balance.
  • Weight Loss. If you are on a calorie controlled diet - a vegan raw food diet is definitely the way to go.
  • General health.  Those eating a higher percentage of raw food report that it makes them feel fit and healthy – no bloated feeling, no ‘digestion’ problems and higher levels of physical energy and mental well being.

Population studies have shown that people who eat a lot of fruit and vegetables have a lower risk of chronic disease, such as heart disease and some cancers.

 Does ‘Raw’ Food Taste Ok?

Raw food taste great!  Whilst the flavours are often different from ‘conventional’ food they are often more intense as you are not cooking the flavour out of things and replacing it with salt & sugar! Textures are also great – with just the same range of bite, crunch and chew as the food you are used to.  You can have a wide range of savoury and sweet dishes – we even make a delicious ‘raw’ chocolate cake that has  no processed sugar, chocolate, flour or cooked/processed anything else!
